Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance
Since
2002, ACTN has partnered with the City of San Antonio and the Internal
Revenue Service (IRS) to provide free income tax preparation services
to low income working families. The features of the program
are:
|
a) insuring that eligible taxpayers take advantage of the Earned Income
Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to maximize their
refunds
b) offering electronic filing for faster refunds and 0%
interest refund loans
c) saving qualifying
taxpayers an average of $200 in tax preparation and refund anticipation
loan fees
d) referring individuals
to other supportive services relating to financial literacy, such as
budgeting classes, homeownership classes, Individual Development
Accounts (IDAs) and down payment assistance
The VITA program is an
essential component of an overall strategy by the City of San Antonio
to strengthen families by building assets and helping them achieve
economic stability. The VITA program creates an opportunity
to connect families with tax credits and other powerful links to
mainstream financial services and asset-building
opportunities. VITA establishes durable connections between
families, neighborhoods and the city’s economy, thereby forming the
building blocks for community transformation. VITA sites are
located throughout the city.
Since becoming a site
for VITA, ACTN has prepared over 3,000 returns resulting in over
$4,000,000 in refunds for families to reinvest in San Antonio’s economy.
In 2008, ACTN expanded
its VITA operations to two locations: the Claude Black
Community Center, and, the H-E-B Store on South W.W. White Road at MLK
Street.
The VITA program
operates from January 23, 2008 thru April 15, 2008. For VITA
site operating hours or further information contact the ACTN office at
210-212-2286.
