In October 2004, ACTN launched
its Each One Teach One Adult Literacy Program, which provides one
on one tutoring in reading, writing and math to older teens (ages
15-19) and adults (ages 20+)
functioning at fifth grade level or below. This population is the
most underserved of the literacy categories, and the hardest to
assist due to barriers such as learning disabilities, poverty,
family instability, low self-esteem, shame embarrassment, and
cultural limitations. ACTN is one of only two agencies in San
Antonio that offers this type of service to the community.
Funding support comes from the City of San Antonio, and in-kind
contributions have been provided through corporate gifts.
The key elements of the program
are:
a)
one on one
instruction through the use of trained literacy volunteers for a
minimum of six months
b)
special testing
to diagnose learning disabilities
c)
personal
attention, individualized instruction at the student’s pace, and
positive reinforcement
from the tutor and EOTO staff
d)
a curriculum that
combines the use of computer software, videos, textbooks and
workbooks, and
authentic or “real life” materials that the
students encounter in their daily lives
e)
tutor training
and ongoing tutor support
f) assisting
students with workforce development and life skills
g)
providing
students with supportive services (vision and hearing screenings,
family counseling,
financial literacy, parenting education, GED
and employment programs)
There currently are 40 students
and 46 volunteer tutors enrolled in EOTO.
